2017 Eastern Region Chip Seal - Complete September 2017

Overview
Chip sealing preserves the integrity and life of deteriorating roadway by applying a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST) seal coat of oil and gravel (chips) to the existing pavement. Restoration is necessary before the underlying road structure is damaged, requiring a much more expensive rebuild.

The following sections were chip-sealed:

US 395 - US 195 Bridge Expansion Joint Replacement - Complete July 2017

Overview
Replaced failing expansion joints on the US 395/Little Spokane River bridge and the US 195/Pine Creek and BNSF bridges.

How you benefit

Economic incentive
Extend the useful life of the bridges and protect the public investment in the infrastructure.

Eastern Region HMA Rumble Strips - Complete July 2017

Overview

Installed centerline rumble strips, edge line rumble strips, and durable striping in the following highway sections:

  • US 2/Milepost 306-315
  • US 395/Milepost 172-190
  • US 395/Milepost 231-241
  • SR 291/Milepost 6.33-13

 

How you benefit

Improves safety
Centerline rumble strips should reduce the number of crossover collisions.

I-90 - Viaduct & 3rd Avenue Bridge - Expansion Joints & Special Repairs - Complete July 2017

Overview
Bridge expansion joints, concrete approach panels, and bridge deck surface were repaired on eastbound and westbound Interstate 90 in and near downtown Spokane.

 

How you benefit

Improves safety
Years of deterioration has resulted in damaged pavement and joints at several locations on I-90. The frequent temporary repairs caused a rough roadway.

 

Partnerships & cooperation
WSDOT worked with the City of Spokane on traffic coordination.

 

US 395 - NSC - Spokane River to Francis - Grading - Complete July 2017

Overview
Project included curb & sidewalk work on city streets that are immediately adjacent to the NSC right of way. Drainage work was also included. Mainline freeway grading was not included at this time.

How you benefit

Relieves congestion
The overall NSC project creates a high-speed, north/south route through Spokane.

Economic incentive
Freight will move more efficiently.

US 2 - Spotted Road to I-90 - ITS - Complete November 2016

Overview
This project included the installation of the WSDOT fiber optic communications from Interstate 90 to the intersection of US 2 and Spotted Road. A new traffic camera was installed in the vicinity of the US 2/Airport Road Interchange.

Better informed drivers can adjust their travel plans based on more reliable traffic information.

NSC - Francis Avenue Improvements - Complete December 2014

Overview
WSDOT  replaced the existing, 160-foot long, Francis Avenue Bridge with a 455-foot long structure. In addition, signal system and configuration changes were made at  the Market Street and Freya Street intersection.

The existing bridge crossed over the BNSF Railway tracks. The new structure provides room for the same tracks and the future new freeway to pass under Francis Avenue.

Eastern Region Intersection Safety Implementation - Completed November 2016

Overview
The project scope was to reduce collision incidence and reduce collision severity at selected intersections through the implementation of low cost countermeasures. The selected improvements included paint striping, durable striping, signing, and foliage removal where required to improve intersection sight distance.

How you benefit

Improves safety
This project addressed safety improvements at 48 intersections located throughout the Eastern Region with a goal of fewer and less severe collisions.
