US 395 - Hawthorne Road - Intersection Improvements - Completed September 2016

Overview
This project included upgrading the existing traffic signal system and revising the lane configurations to allow for an eight phase operation of the traffic signal increases efficiency through the intersection. Dedicated left turn lanes were added each direction on Hawthorne Rd as well as a dedicated right turn lane on the east leg.

2016 Eastern Region Chip Seal - Completed September 2016

Overview
Chip sealing preserves the integrity and life of deteriorating roadway by applying a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST) seal coat of oil and gravel (chips) to the existing pavement. Restoration is necessary before the underlying road structure is damaged, requiring a much more expensive rebuild.

 

How you benefit

Economic incentive
Extends the life of the sub-surface roadway structure preserving the citizens investment in the roadway.

I-90 - Freya Street Interchange - Ramp Improvements - Completed September 2016

Overview
The new off ramp routes traffic onto existing Second Avenue several blocks prior to Freya. Drivers are able to select the proper lane to continue west on Second or turn north on Freya well ahead of the signal. The signal now only requires two phases.

 

How you benefit

Relieves congestion
The old ramp was too short and traffic backed up onto the main freeway lanes during busy commute hours.

Rehabilitation of the southbound concrete pavement surface.

US 195 - Plaza to Cornwall Road - Complete October 2015

Overview
Ground off the existing top layer of asphalt and installed new hot mix asphalt driving surface.

A hot-mix asphalt (HMA) overlay restores a smooth driving surface.

Economic incentive
Replacing the top layer of asphalt pavement prevents intrusion of water into the underlying layers and ultimate degradation of the entire pavement structure, protecting the public investment.

Eastern Region ADA Pedestrian Access - Complete September 2017

Project news

  • Most work complete. Minor items remain.
     

In this project, ADA improvement were made at selected intersections on US 2 and SR 290 in the Spokane area, SR 902 in Medical Lake, SR 904 in Cheney and the Sprague Lake rest areas.  The selected intersections will have the ADA features brought up to current standards.  The work was handled by the Wm. Winkler Company of Newman Lake, WA with a construction bid of $1,093,778.

SR 26 - US 195 - North Fork Palouse River Bridge Repairs

This project entails work on the SR 26 bridge and US 195 bridge over the north Fork of the Palouse River in north Colfax. 

On SR 26, the sidewalk and pedestrian rail will be replaced, using the supports installed in 2015.  A guardrail will be added to protect pedestrians from errant vehicles.

On US 195, girder support repairs are planned.  That work may not take place in 2016.

Why is WSDOT repairing these bridges?
Both structures were constructed in the mid 1930's and need repairs?

US 2 - US 395 - Intersection Improvements

  • This project was awarded to Specialized Pavement Marking, Inc. of Tulation, OR with a construction bid of $1,526,969.

This project includes installation of enhanced striping and signage at selected intersections on US 2 and US 395.

Why is WSDOT addressing these intersections?
Enhanced signage and striping may assist drivers as they approach intersections of local roads with high-speed highways.

US 395 - North Spokane Corridor - BNSF Railway Realignment - Complete December 2015

Overview
Realigned 7.5 miles of BNSF track, built two freeway bridges, and built two pedestrian/bike trail bridges. Extended "Children of the Sun" trail approximately one mile into the Hillyard community.

How you benefit

Relieves congestion
When fully completed the NSC provides a high speed north south route through Spokane.  Bike path provides safer alternate travel mode for commuters
