Current News

Join us June 20 to see what's ahead for SR 520's major projects and provide your input

We are holding an open house on June 20 to preview two upcoming SR 520 projects in Seattle. One is the SR 520 / I-5 Express Lanes Connection Project, with construction planned to start in 2020. The other is the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project. This June 20 meeting kicks off a summerlong series of community workshops focused design refinements for key Portage Bay project elements, including a replacement bridge, a landscaped Roanoke lid over the highway, and an extension across Portage Bay of the SR 520 bicycle and pedestrian trail. We hope you'll join us! Here are the particulars:

  • Thursday, June 20, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; presentation at 5:45, followed by Q&A and open house
  • St. Marks Episcopal Cathedral, Bloedel Hall; 1245 10th Ave. E., Seattle

Montlake Project design and preconstruction open house now available online

Thank you to all who attended the design and preconstruction open house for the SR 520 Montlake Project last Thursday, June 6. About 70 attendees reviewed information about the project’s design features, construction impacts, the Community Construction Management Plan, and more. If you missed the meeting, or you’d like to revisit the information, we invite you to check out the online open house, which will be open until Thursday, June 20. Thanks to all who participate!

Update on WSDOT's purchase, use of Montlake Market property

We updated the community at a May 23 public meeting regarding the SR 520 Montlake Project and how it will affect the Montlake Market and 76 gas station. We noted that WSDOT will take ownership of the property in June, and that WSDOT leadership determined the market cannot practicably be preserved during SR 520 construction. We also discussed a new legislative directive to WSDOT that seeks to establish a temporary market or food service in Montlake during Montlake Project construction. You'll find more information on this topic on our Montlake Project webpage.

Program Overview

The SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program is enhancing public safety and mobility by replacing the highway's aging, vulnerable bridges and making significant transit and roadway improvements throughout the corridor. Built in stages, the construction program's completed and planned improvements extend from I-405 in Bellevue to I-5 in Seattle.
