New addition will improve safety at 108th Street Northeast

MARYSVILLE – This weekend, travelers will need to navigate an 8 mile signed detour around State Route 9 at 108th Street Northeast in Marysville. During this closure, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will build a single-lane roundabout at the intersection. SR 9 will be closed between Northeast 84th Street and Northeast 172nd Street from 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 13. This closure is weather-dependent.

Detour routes will be signed. Residents will be granted local access.

When the roundabout opens, an advisory speed limit of 15 miles per hour will be posted to improve traffic flow into and out of the intersection.

Proven safety record

Roundabouts reduce injury collisions by 75 percent. Right now, nearly 10% of the 16,000 drivers who use this intersection every day are attempting to turn onto SR 9 from stop signs at 108th Street Northeast. Turning from a stop onto a highway increases the risk of collision. The new roundabout will reduce the severity of collisions and wait times at the intersection.
