ASHFORD – A portion of State Route 706 leading to Mount Rainier National Park will remain closed until further notice due to an unstable hillside above the highway. As the continuing slide remains too dangerous to remove at this point, the Washington State Department of Transportation does not know when the highway will reopen.

With more rain in the forecast and the stability of the slide uncertain, the Washington State Department of Transportation does not know when the highway will reopen.

Travelers who use State Route 4 near West Fork Creek should plan ahead for an extended closure. On Thursday, Jan. 23, a portion of an adjacent hillside slid carrying rocks, mud and trees onto the roadway. The hillside is actively moving and too unstable and saturated from heavy rainfall to safely clear and reopen the highway at this time.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 20th Street East under I-5 in Fife will close around-the-clock. The closure allows crews to mobilize a large crane under I-5 to begin installing girders on the new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge.
