Highway Weather Update

As of 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2006 

WSDOT crews have been working non-stop for the past two days clearing ice and snow.  Over a 24-hour period more than 190 vehicles are working Western Washington roadways.

For the latest on road conditions due to snow or this month's rain, scroll to your county below.

Clallam County

SR 117, Tumwater Truck Route in Port Angeles (mileposts 0 - 1.4)
The roadway is now open in both directions.


U.S. 101, east of Port Angeles (mileposts 252 - 258)
Heavy snow, downed trees and multiple collisions on U.S. 101 are making travel difficult. WSDOT crews are working to keep the highway open.


Clark County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.


Cowlitz County

SR 504, at the Cowlitz-Skamania county line (milepost 45)
All lanes closed due to slide.  Gate at milepost 45 is closed to prevent entry.

SR 4, east of Stella between Germany Creek Road and Coal Creek Road(mileposts 50 - 55)
There will be intermittent single lane closures for cable netting installation from Nov. 27 - Dec. 8.


Grays Harbor County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.


Island County

Highway 20 south of Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island has compact snow and ice. Drivers should watch for downed trees. 


Jefferson

Hood Canal Bridge updates
For real-time updates on Hood Canal Bridge closures, call 1-800-419-9085. 
WSDOT guidelines require the closure of the bridge if wind speeds reach 40 mph for 15 minutes or more.  The bridge is currently open to traffic.

Chains are no longer recommended for semi-trucks on U.S. 101 between the Big Quilcene River (milepost 297) and Bee Mill Road (milepost 303) in the Mt. Walker


King County

***Traffic Advisory***
Drivers should expect snow and ice on all state highways in King County. Patches of ice and compact snow are on I-5 and I-405 through out the sound.  If you don't have to travel, stay home. WSDOT crews are out in force plowing snow, and applying sand and deicer.

As cold temperatures persist through out the morning roads are expected to refreeze. If you are venturing out this morning prepare to drive for winter weather conditions, slow down, keep extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you and be patient.

SR 518 to and from SeaTac Airport looks good.

I-405 to SR 181 in Renton is back open.

Westbound SR 516 to northbound I-5 is now open.

Drivers should watch for icy patches on I-90 near Issaquah


Chinook Pass Closed for the Season
SR 410 Chinook Pass will open again in the Spring of 2007. Eastbound SR 410 is closed at the Mt. Rainier National Park gate, 2 miles east of Crystal Mt. Blvd. Westbound SR 410 is closed at the Morse Creek gate 5.5 miles east Chinook Pass summit.

I-90 Snoqualmie Pass
I-90 is open. There is snow and slush in place. Traction tires are advised. Chains are required for vehicles over 10,000 GVW. Oversize vehicles are prohibited. For current pass conditions view the mountain pass report.


Kitsap County

Hood Canal Bridge updates
For real-time updates on Hood Canal Bridge closures, call 1-800-419-9085. 
WSDOT guidelines require the closure of the bridge if wind speeds reach 40 mph for 15 minutes or more.  The bridge is currently open to traffic.

SR 3
The highway looks good but motorists should be aware that compact snow and ice  is still in place in shady areas near the vicinities of Austin (mileposts 39-40), Clear Crick (milepost 45), the SR 3/SR 308 interchange (mileposts 49-50), Finn Hill (milepost 52), and the offramp from SR 3 to SR 305 ( milepost 13). Additionally, slush and compact snow is visible on the centerline of SR 3 from milepost 353 to the Hood Canal Bridge (milepost 360).

Kittitas County

I-90 Snoqualmie Pass
I-90 is open. There is snow and slush in places. No restrictions. For current pass conditions view the mountain pass report.

Klickitat County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report. 


Lewis County

Snow and ice is covering many state highways. Crews are applying de-icers and plowing.

SR 123 north of White Pass (mp 0 to Cayuse Pass)

SR 123 is closed in for the season.

SR 508 – near Bear Canyon
A complete closure of the highway is in place between mileposts 20 and 24.5, due to an unstable slope at Bear Canyon (milepost 21.4).


Mason County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.

Pacific County

Snow and ice is covering many state highways. Crews are applying de-icers and plowing.


Pierce County

SR 16
An earlier collision (11:15 a.m.) on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (SR 16) partially blocked a lane. The lanes are all open but there are residual backups.

The bridge deck is looking much better.

SR 123 Cayuse Pass
SR 123 Cayuse pass (milepost 5.42 to 16.8) Mount Rainier National Park crews closed SR 123 due to roads washed out.


Skagit County

***Traffic Advisory***
Drivers should expect snow and ice on all state highways in Skagit County.  If you don't have to travel, stay home. WSDOT crews are out in force plowing snow, and applying sand and deicer.

As cold temperatures persist through out the morning roads are expected to refreeze. If you are venturing out this morning prepare to drive for winter weather conditions, slow down, keep extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you and be patient.

Most roads are bare and wet, but it is extremely cold.

SR 534 from Conway to McMurray
Crews may close SR 534 due to downed trees.  They are currently on the scene and assessing the roadway.

SR 9 is now completely open. North of Arlington is well-sanded but has compact snow and ice, and is down to one lane of travel in spots.

SR 530 at Arnot Road
The road reopened at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning (11/27).

SR 20 Sedro-Woolley east to gate at MP 134, SR 9 north of Sedro-Woolley and I-5 corridor from MP 231 to MP 207.7 are all well sanded but have compact snow and ice

Highway 20 - Closed for the winter between mileposts 134 to 171. Local traffic only beyond milepost 110.

We have a gravel lane open in each direction and have returned to install the culvert and pave the road.  You can hear updates on this repair project by calling (360) 757-5944.


Skamania County

SR 14 west of North Bonneville (milepost 34.27)
Emergency slope repairs begin on SR 14 just west of North Bonneville. During construction, motorists can expect single lane closures during the day with flaggers. No night work is anticipated. Motorists should expect minor delays.  The project is expected to be completed by Dec. 20.


Snohomish County

Eastbound SR 2 has compact snow and ice

SR 9
Drivers should be extra cautious. The road is bare in places but there are patches of ice in many sections.

I-5 Rest Areas at Smokey Point
The rest areas at Smokey Point on northbound and southbound I-5 are still closed due to power outage. 

I-405 in Bothell
All lanes of northbound I-405 are open following a long closure Monday night due to multiple collisions.

SR 522 east of Woodinville
SR 522 is back open from SR 9 to Paradise Lake Road near Woodinville.  WSDOT crews sanded the highway Tuesday night, but drivers should be cautious due to snow and ice on the roadway.

US 2 at Sunset Falls Slide east of Gold Bar (milepost 35.7-37)
We have two lanes open in the area, but speeds are limited to 35 miles per hour. Crews will continue to monitor this area.


Stevens County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.


Thurston County

Southbound I-5 from Maytown to Chehalis is slow from earlier collisions and closures.


Wahkiakum County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.

Whatcom County

***Traffic Advisory***
 All roads north of Bellingham have compact snow and ice. High winds are causing drifting snow and low visibility. Crews recommend staying at home if you can.

Bellingham has low visibility and winds up to 30 miles per hour.

Chains required on SR 542 (Mt. Baker Highway).

I-5 in Ferndale
One southbound lane is closed by a jacknifed semi.


SR 542 Between Boulder Creek and Glacier (milepost 29.9)
We will continue monitoring the slide area around the clock. Repair work on the river bank may require lane closures. Crews are working at several other locations beyond Glacier and drivers may experience one lane of alternating traffic at these locations. Any delays at these locations are expected to be minimal.

Whitman County

There are no closures or weather-related hazards to report.

Yakima County

SR 410 Chinook Pass Closed for the Season
SR 410 Chinook Pass will open again in the Spring of 2007. Westbound SR 410 is closed at the Morse Creek gate 5.5 miles east Chinook Pass summit. Eastbound SR 410 is closed at the Mt. Rainier National Park gate 2 miles east of Crystal Mt. Blvd.
