WSDOT North Central Region Weekly Construction Update & Travel Advisory for Sept. 16 – Sept. 20

Take Note: 

  • This Sunday (9/15) expect a slow rolling mobile Lidar operation on SR 28 between Trinidad and Ephrata from 6:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m.
  • On Monday (9/16), the Keller Ferry begins a 16-day closure for repairs and pontoon replacement
  • On Saturday (9/21), Omak’s Chamber of Commerce Block Party II will close SR 215 from Central to Apple in the City of Omak from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

US 2 Variable Message Sign Installation (west of Skykomish)
County: King  Highway: US 2 Region: North Central 
Location: MP 45 (Grotto, 4 miles west of Skykomish)
Description:  Neppell Electrical is the contractor for the installation of variable message signage on Stevens Pass west of Skykomish.  
Work schedule: Monday and Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. expect short delays with flagger-controlled traffic where the contractor is setting the timber pole and installing the VMS sign.  There will also be intermittent closures of both the westbound and eastbound shoulders at the work site.

US 2 Meet Line Pavement Repair (Stevens Pass summit)
Counties: King/Chelan  Highway: US 2 Region: North Central 
Location: MP 64-71 (west of Stevens Pass Summit to east of Lanham Lake trailhead/Stevens Pass Nordic Center)
Description:  A maintenance crew will be performing meet line pavement repair from west of Stevens Pass summit to east of the Lanham Lake trailhead and Stevens Pass Nordic Center.  Center lane closure and a reduced speed zone of 45 mph will be in place for the duration of this work.  Speed returns to 60 mph during non-working hours, including weekends.
Work schedule: Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. expect flagger controlled traffic with some delays, lane shifts and a reduced speed zone of 45 mph during working hours.

US 2 Stevens Pass Avalanche Deflection Berm #9399
County: King  Highway: US 2 Region: North Central
Location: MP 60.4 – 60.5 (west of Stevens Pass summit)  
Description:  Strider Construction is the contractor for this $750,000 project to construct an avalanche deflection berm in the Tunnel Creek drainage area of King County to direct avalanches away from US 2.
Work schedule: On Monday, expect delays up to 30 minutes at the summit and at Old Cascade Highway while the contractor is blasting and clearing the roadway.  Blasting work and delays will occur midday to late afternoon.

US 2/97 Utility Work (Douglas County PUD)
County: Douglas  Highway: US 2 Region: North Central 
Location: MP 138 (2 miles south of Orondo/junction of US 2 and US 97)
Description:  Douglas County Public Utility District crew will be constructing an access road outside WSDOT right-of-way to reach towers located above the highway.  
Work schedule: Thursday only, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. expect flagger controlled traffic with delays up to 10 minutes to clear rocks and debris that may fall onto the roadway during the construction of the access road.

US 2/97 Intersection Improvements #9454 (Dryden to Monitor)
County: Chelan  Highway: US 2 Region: North Central 
Location: MP 106 - 115 (Dryden to Monitor)
Description:  Neppell Electrical is the contractor for this project that will repair and improve flashing warning beacons at five intersections between Dryden and Monitor on US 2/97.  This project is scheduled to be completed in mid-September.  During the work, the “Prepare to Stop When Flashing” that correspond with the change of intersection signal lights from green to red will be covered.  A temporary sign without lights will inform travelers to “Be Prepared to Stop” while the contractor performs necessary repairs.
Work schedule: Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. expect temporary signage, shoulder closures and lane shifts at the intersections of US 2/97 at Dryden Ave./Johnson Rd., Goodwin Rd./Hay Canyon Rd., Aplets Way/Nahahum Canyon Rd., Cotlets Way/Eels Rd., Main St./Easy St.

SR 28 Mobile Lidar Work (Erlandsen Engineering)
County: Grant  Highway: SR 28  Region: North Central
Location: MP 22- 44.5 (Trinidad to Ephrata)
Description: Erlandsen Engineering will be conducting Lidar work along SR 28 to pick up power poles and other utility object measurements.  This requires a mobile operation traveling at approximately 10 mph along this stretch of roadway in both directions.  This work will not be conducted inside the City of Quincy limits.  
Work schedule: Sunday only beginning at 6:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m., expect a slow mobile operation with attenuator truck traveling between Trinidad and Ephrata.  Travelers are advised pass with caution in appropriate locations.

SR 28/13th Avenue Roundabout (City of Quincy) 
County: Grant   Highway: SR 28  Region: North Central
Location: SR 28 MP 28 (intersection with 13th Avenue)  
Description:  The City of Quincy has contracted Tommer Construction to build a roundabout at the intersection of SR 28 and 13th Avenue.
Work schedule: Wednesday and Thursday nights only, from 10 pm. to 5 a.m. expect flagger controlled traffic with possible delays where the contractor is installing permanent marking on the newly constructed roundabout.

US 97 Beebe Bridge Inspection 
County: Douglas/Chelan  Highway: US 97  Region: North Central
Location: MP 234 (South of Junction with SR 150)
Description: A WSDOT bridge inspection crew will be conducting a routine biennial inspection of the Beebe Bridge to assess for any deterioration or necessary repairs.
Work schedule: Tuesday and Wednesday, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., expect flagger controlled traffic with delays of 20 minutes while the bridge crew inspects the structure.

US 97 South of Blewett Pass Paving #9339
County: Kittitas  Highway: US 97  Region: North Central
Location: MP 149 - 165 (Junction with SR 970 to Tronson Creek near summit of Blewett Pass)
Description: Central Washington Asphalt is the contractor for this $5.0 million project.  The project will preserve roadway integrity by planning and paving between the junction with SR 970 to Tronson Creek near the summit of Blewett Pass.  
Work schedule: Monday through Friday, with a possibility of work on Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., expect one lane, flagger controlled traffic with delays up to 20 minutes in the work zone where the contractor is installing rumble strips, guidepost and pavement markings on the length of the project.  On Saturday (9/21) expect flagger controlled traffic with delays of 20 minutes at milepost 161.4 (between Swauk campground and Pipe Creek Sno Park) where a contractor is repairing damaged guardrail.

US 97 Boundary Bridge #9323
County: Kittitas  Highway: US 97  Region: North Central
Location: MP 159-160 (near Swauk Campground)
Description: In this $4.5M project, WHH Nisqually Construction Services will construct a concrete bridge to replace an old culvert that created a fish passage barrier. Work will include a detour widening to shift traffic while the bridge is constructed half at a time.  Two-way traffic will be maintained outside working hours throughout the life of the project, except some instances of work that may require overnight flagging. No full closures of US 97 are planned for this project.  Currently there is reduced speed zone of 50 mph and a 12 ft. load restriction through the work zone.  Work started April 15, 2019.
Work schedule: Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., expect flagger-controlled traffic with delays up to 20 minutes as the contractor prepares the site for winter suspension.  The contractor is in the process of shifting traffic back to the original highway alignment, at which time the reduced speed limit and oversized load restrictions will be lifted.

US 97A Utility Conduit Installation (Chelan County PUD)
County: Chelan  Highway: US 97A  Region: North Central
Location: MP 223 (City of Chelan)
Description: A contractor for Chelan County PUD will be installing utility conduit on W. Woodin Ave. in the City of Chelan beginning Monday, Sept. 16 and continuing for about a month.  
Work schedule: Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. expect flagger controlled traffic with delays on W. Woodin Ave.

SR 153 Methow River Bridge Structural Rehabilitation, Phase 3 #9388
County: Okanogan  Highway: SR 153 Region: North Central 
Location: MP 11.83-22.36 (Methow to Carlton)
Description: The third phase of rehabilitation work on the three Methow River bridges between Methow and Carlton.  This work will include column jacketing and retrofitting to rehabilitate these bridges.  Work begins June 17 and is scheduled to be complete the end of September.  Traffic control will include alternating, single lane travel on each bridge consecutively.  The project is schedule to be complete the end of September.
Work Schedule: Beginning July 17 through September, there will be intermittent flagger controlled traffic at all three bridges Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.  Work is primarily under and around the bridge, so delays will be short, primarily when the crew is moving and staging equipment.
