Project overview
Corrosion from weather is damaging the Snohomish River Bridge and Steamboat Slough Bridge. Beginning in 2023, crews working for WSDOT will rehabilitate the northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge between Everett and Marysville by repairing or replacing steel truss elements, substructure elements, sway frames, timber sidewalks, cleaning and painting metal surfaces, and mechanical and electrical rehabilitation. Crews will also perform rehabilitation work to the SR 529 Steamboat Slough Bridge in both directions to ensure the end lift upper wheels work properly and the movable span is balanced.
What to expect
The speed limited on southbound SR 529 near Marysville has been reduced to 25 mph from I-5 to the Steamboat Slough Bridge. The southbound Steamboat Slough Bridge remains safe for travel, but the speed limit has been temporarily reduced because of 97-year-old worn steel plates that connect beams on the bridge. Lowering the speed limit reduces vibration and lessens wear on the bridge. No dates have been set for the work. After the plates are replaced, the temporary speed limit will end.
SR 529 travelers, users of local roads, and waterways can expect:
Northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge: There will be a four-month closure where both directions of traffic will each have one lane on the southbound Snohomish River Bridge. The E Marine View Drive on-ramp to northbound SR 529 will also be closed during this four-month period. Traffic will be directed through local streets to get back on the northbound SR 529. Access from northbound SR 529 to Smith Island and Spencer Island will be open. A shuttle will take bicyclists past the work zone.
There will also be a four-month one lane reduction and multiple weekend full closures on the northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge. Traffic will be diverted to northbound I-5 as an alternative route during weekend full closures.
Southbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge: There will be multiple nighttime full roadway closures. The traffic will be diverted to southbound I-5 during the closures. Local access to the tribal lands will be open.
Northbound SR 529 Steamboat Slough Bridge:
There will be two four-day full closures of the road and waterway. Traffic will be diverted to northbound I-5 during the continuous full closures. Access from northbound SR 529 to Smith Island and Spencer Island will be open.
Southbound SR 529 Steamboat Slough Bridge:
There will be two three-day full closures of the road and waterway. Traffic will be diverted to southbound I-5 during the continuous full closures. Local access to tribal lands will be open.
This project includes work on the northbound Snohomish River Bridge and both directions on the Steamboat Slough Bridges.
